Best morning of our Dubai trip.
Captain Yusuf pointed out an oryx herd at 3,800 feet. We landed to a proper Turkish breakfast on the sand. My partner cried. Worth every dirham.

The kind of morning you cannot book - you can only show up for it.
We arrived at 4:10 a.m. to Elif handing out cardamom coffee and a fleece I still talk about. Capt. Pieter walked us through the basket drill, lit the burner, and lifted us so gently Tom did not notice we were airborne. Forty-five minutes of silence, one oryx family moving below us, the dunes going copper beneath the basket. The landing was softer than an airline. Breakfast was real - Turkish eggs, local dates, mint tea - not a sad granola bar. Do this on your first morning in Dubai, not your last.

Our eight-year-old was nervous at pickup and confident before lift-off. Capt. Amira walked her through every step, let her help fire the burner once we were up, and handed her a first-flight certificate that is now on the fridge in Hampstead. The briefing is serious without being scary.

She said yes at 3,900 feet. I had WhatsApped Elif two weeks earlier - she hid the ring in a falcon-glove box, the pilot pretended he needed a photo of the horizon, and I pulled it out as the sun crested the dunes. Flawless.

"Lived in Dubai ten years and never seen it from up there. The silence at 3,500 feet is something else. Worth the early wake-up."
