How GCAA-Licensed Balloon Flights Actually Work

Every rule, every inspection, every weather gate — what happens before you step into the basket.

Licensing layers

GCAA licenses every pilot flying commercial balloon in UAE airspace. Pilots need minimum 500 logged hours, annual medical, specialized desert-flying certification.

Pre-flight inspection

Every balloon undergoes 50-hour full inspection cycles plus daily pre-flight checks.

  • Daily: 15-min pre-flight check
  • Every 50 hours: envelope inspection
  • Annually: full airworthiness review
  • Post-incident: retest before return to service

Weather gates

Flight only proceeds if surface winds below 10 knots, upper-air winds below 15 knots, no precipitation within 20 km. Abort rate is about 10-15% during shoulder-season months.
