Dune Bashing in Dubai: What It Is and Which Safari Has It

Dune bashing Dubai explained: what the 4x4 drive is, which shared and private Land Cruiser safaris include it, and the AED price of each package.

  • Quick read
  • Safari Desert Dubai
In this guide

Dune bashing in Dubai is a 4x4 drive over desert sand dunes in a Land Cruiser, steered by a professional driver while you ride as a passenger. At Safari Desert Dubai it is part of the shared and private morning and evening Land Cruiser safaris, from AED 225 per adult on the shared morning safari, with pickup included.

Key takeaways

  • Dune bashing is a passenger experience: a professional driver handles the Land Cruiser 4x4, and guests do not drive.
  • It comes inside a safari package, not as a separate ticket. The shared evening safari is AED 240 per adult (12+) and AED 225 per child (5 to 11); the shared morning safari is AED 225 per adult and AED 210 per child.
  • Private safaris are priced per car for up to 6 guests: AED 799 for the private morning safari and AED 1,400 for the private evening safari with the BBQ dinner.
  • Every safari includes pickup. The evening safari adds a short camel ride and a BBQ dinner with belly dance, tanoura and fire shows.
  • If you want the desert without dune bashing, the Standard Camp (AED 125 per person) and Premium Camp (AED 250 per person) have no safari drive, but they need a private transfer at AED 450 per car for 5 to 6.
  • If you want to be the one behind the wheel, a self-drive buggy is the closer match. Buggies are priced per buggy and do not include pickup.

What is dune bashing?

Dune bashing is the name used in the UAE for driving a four-wheel-drive vehicle up, across and down soft sand dunes. The vehicle climbs a slope, tips over the crest and slides down the far side, then turns along the next ridge. From the back seat it feels like a slow, swaying roller coaster made of sand.

The meaning of the term is simple, but the details matter when you book. In a Dubai desert safari the driving is done by a professional driver who knows the vehicle and the sand. You sit inside a closed Land Cruiser 4x4 with the rest of your group. You do not need any driving experience, and there is nothing to steer, brake or learn.

That is the main difference between dune bashing and the other desert activities in Dubai. On a self-drive dune buggy or a quad bike, you are in control, you wear a helmet, goggles and gloves, and a guide leads the convoy. On dune bashing, the driver is in control and you are a passenger.

Is dune bashing the same as off-roading?

Dune bashing is a kind of off-road driving, but the phrase is used for this specific desert activity: a 4x4 run over sand dunes as part of a safari. When a Dubai safari listing says "4x4 dune bashing", it means this part of the trip in the Land Cruiser.

Where does it happen?

All Safari Desert Dubai rides and safaris run in the desert outside Dubai. The pickup takes you there from the city, and the driver chooses the route on the day. You do not need to know or plan the location yourself.

Which Safari Desert Dubai safaris include dune bashing?

Dune bashing is part of the Land Cruiser safaris, both shared and private, morning and evening. It also comes with the two safari packages that add a 30 minute ATV quad bike session. The camp-only dinners do not include it, because they have no safari drive.

Here is how the packages compare. Every price is shown exactly as the site lists it, with its unit.

You can see all the safaris side by side on the Dubai desert safari tours page.

The evening safari with dune bashing and BBQ dinner

The evening safari is the one most visitors picture when they hear "dune bashing Dubai". The shared Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner includes:

  • pickup,
  • dune bashing in a 4x4,
  • a short camel ride,
  • a BBQ dinner with belly dance, tanoura and fire shows.

The site gives about 5 to 6 hours for the evening safari, from pickup to drop-off. The price is AED 240 per adult (12 and over) and AED 225 per child (5 to 11).

The evening trip suits travellers who want the drive and the camp in one booking. You ride in a shared Land Cruiser with other guests, so it is the simpler choice for couples, friends and solo travellers who do not need a car to themselves.

Evening safari with a 30 minute ATV session

If you want to drive something yourself as well, the Evening Desert Safari + 30 Min ATV Quad Bike package adds a 30 minute quad bike ride to the evening safari. It costs AED 375 per adult (12+) and AED 340 per child (5 to 11), with pickup included. Every quad rider wears a helmet, and the guide gives a safety briefing before the ride.

The morning safari with dune bashing

The Morning Desert Safari With Land Cruiser 4X4 runs in a Land Cruiser 4x4 and lasts about four hours, with water and soft drinks. Its tour page lists dune bashing, sandboarding and a camel ride among the inclusions, along with pickup and drop-off. Confirm the inclusions when you book, as the tour page is the reference.

The shared morning safari costs AED 225 per adult and AED 210 per child. It is the lowest safari price on the site that includes dune bashing.

The morning safari has no dinner and no shows. It suits travellers who want the drive and the dunes in the first part of the day and then have the afternoon and evening free in the city.

The Morning Desert Safari + 30 Min ATV Quad Bike package adds a 30 minute quad bike ride. It costs AED 290 per adult and AED 285 per child, with pickup included.

Private dune bashing: your own Land Cruiser

A private safari gives your group its own Land Cruiser and driver. Both private safaris are priced per car for up to 6 guests, and both include pickup:

  • Private Morning Desert Safari With Land Cruiser 4X4: AED 799 per car.
  • Private Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner Land Cruiser 4x4: AED 1,400 per car.

The Private Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner follows the same evening plan, with the camel ride and the BBQ dinner with shows, but nobody outside your group shares the car.

A private car makes sense for families who want to set the mood in the vehicle, for groups of friends, and for anyone who feels unsure about dune bashing. With your own driver, you can tell the driver before the drive starts if anyone in the car would like a gentler ride. The price stays the same per car whether you are two guests or six, so read it as a car price, not a seat price.

Morning or evening dune bashing: which to choose?

Both times of day include dune bashing in the Land Cruiser. The difference is everything around it.

Question Morning safari Evening safari
Length About four hours About 5 to 6 hours
Food and drinks Water and soft drinks BBQ dinner
Shows None Belly dance, tanoura and fire shows
Camel ride Listed on the tour page Short camel ride included
Shared price AED 225 per adult, AED 210 per child AED 240 per adult, AED 225 per child
Private price AED 799 per car, up to 6 guests AED 1,400 per car, up to 6 guests

Choose the morning safari if:

  • you want a shorter trip and a free evening,
  • you prefer the lower shared price,
  • you are not interested in a dinner or shows.

Choose the evening safari if:

  • you want dune bashing, a camel ride and dinner in one trip,
  • you like the idea of ending the day at a desert camp with belly dance, tanoura and fire shows,
  • you have only one free day for the desert and want to see as much as possible.

The site names October to March as the best season for desert trips. Book ahead for the date you want.

Is dune bashing safe, and who should skip it?

Dune bashing is a real off-road drive, so it can feel strong. The car rocks, tilts and drops over the crests. The driver is a professional who handles the Land Cruiser, but it is still a bumpy, physical ride for passengers.

This post does not give medical advice. If you are pregnant, or if you have a back, neck or heart condition or any other health concern, check with a doctor and tell the team before booking. They can help you choose a trip without the drive.

A few practical points help most guests enjoy the ride:

  • Be ready at the pickup time given in your booking, so the day runs to plan.
  • Tell the driver before the drive starts if anyone in the car feels unwell.
  • Follow the driver's instructions at all times, in the car and at photo stops.
  • Keep loose items such as phones and sunglasses in a bag, so nothing slides around the cabin.

For children, the shared safaris list adults as 12 and over and children as 5 to 11. For any question about a younger child or a specific age, confirm with the team when you book.

Desert safari in Dubai without dune bashing

Some travellers want the desert camp and the dinner but not the drive. There are two ways to do this at Safari Desert Dubai.

Camp-only BBQ dinners

The Standard Camp and Premium Camp packages are BBQ dinners with live entertainment shows and no safari drive:

  • Standard Camp: AED 125 per person.
  • Premium Camp: AED 250 per person.

A private transfer must be booked with either camp, at AED 450 per car for 5 to 6 guests. From October to March, pickup is 2:45 to 3:30 PM and drop-off 9:00 to 9:30 PM. From April to September, pickup is 3:45 to 4:30 PM and drop-off 9:30 to 9:45 PM.

A camel ride on its own

A camel ride in the desert lasts 20 to 25 minutes and costs AED 150 per person. It is one of the extras on the activities form, along with sandboarding at AED 50 per person.

If you are unsure, the private safari is the other route. With your own car and driver, tell the team in advance what your group is comfortable with.

Dune bashing or a self-drive buggy?

The other big desert thrill in Dubai is driving it yourself. The two feel very different, and they are priced in different ways.

Dune bashing on a safari Self-drive dune buggy
Who drives A professional driver You, following a guide
Vehicle Land Cruiser 4x4 Polaris RZR or Can-Am Maverick buggy with a roll cage and seatbelts
Price unit Per person (shared) or per car (private) Per buggy
Lowest price AED 225 per adult, shared morning safari AED 600 per buggy, 2 Seater Polaris RZR 1000 CC, 30 min
Pickup Included Not included
Safety gear Not applicable to passengers Helmet, goggles and gloves

The self-drive buggies are priced per buggy, not per person. A 2 seater carries two people and a 4 seater four. On the 2 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC, the prices are AED 600 for 30 min, AED 900 for 1 hour and AED 1,750 for 2 hours, per buggy. The 4 Seater version is AED 800, AED 1,200 and AED 2,200 per buggy.

No buggy price includes pickup. You can add a sharing transfer at AED 175 per person (two or more from one pickup point), a private car at AED 450 for 5 to 6, or meet on site at the location emailed to you after booking. Buggies start on the hour from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, daily, and a transfer picks up 1 hour before the start.

Before every buggy ride, the guide gives a safety briefing on how to drive the vehicle, the safety gear and what to do in an emergency. Riders keep a safe gap and follow the guide's path. For the buggy driver and passenger ages, confirm with the team when you book.

If you are still choosing between a safari, a buggy, a quad and the other activities, the guide to choosing a Dubai desert activity compares them all in one place.

Planning your dune bashing trip

What to wear and bring

Wear light, comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes. Sand gets everywhere, so sunglasses and a scarf help at photo stops. Bring a passport or a national ID. If you add a quad bike session, the helmet, goggles and gloves are provided.

Pickup

Every safari includes pickup, so you only need to be ready at the time given in your booking. The camp-only dinners are the exception, as they need the AED 450 private transfer.

Payment and confirmation

Payment is by Visa or Mastercard in AED, in full online when booking, with no card fee. The booking confirmation arrives by email within 48 hours of payment.

Cancelling or changing a booking

For bookings of up to 3 guests, there is no cancellation fee 96 hours or more before the tour. A 50% fee applies from 24 to 96 hours, and 100% under 24 hours or for a no-show. Refunds are less a 5% processing fee. Rescheduling is free, subject to availability, and you cancel or change by email only. Larger groups should read the refund policy on the site before booking.

If Safari Desert Dubai cancels a tour, for example for weather, guests choose a refund less the 5% fee or a new date at no charge. Once a tour has started, it is not refunded.

A simple way to decide

Ask three questions:

  1. Do you want dinner and shows? If yes, book the evening safari. If no, book the morning safari.
  2. Do you want your own car? If yes, book the private safari, priced per car for up to 6 guests. If no, book the shared safari, priced per person.
  3. Do you also want to ride something yourself? If yes, choose the + 30 Min ATV version, or book a self-drive buggy separately.

In short

Dune bashing in Dubai is a passenger ride over sand dunes in a Land Cruiser 4x4, driven by a professional driver. At Safari Desert Dubai it comes with every Land Cruiser safari: the shared morning safari from AED 225 per adult, the shared evening safari with BBQ dinner from AED 240 per adult, and the private safaris at AED 799 or AED 1,400 per car for up to 6 guests. Pickup is included on all of them. If you would rather skip the drive, the camp-only dinners have no safari drive, and if you would rather drive, a self-drive buggy puts you behind the wheel.

FAQ

Questions to ask before your desert adventure

What does dune bashing mean in Dubai?
Dune bashing means a 4x4 ride across soft desert sand dunes as part of a safari. At Safari Desert Dubai a professional driver handles the Land Cruiser while guests sit inside as passengers, so no driving experience is needed. It is included in the shared and private morning and evening Land Cruiser safaris, which all run in the desert outside Dubai.
How much is a desert safari with dune bashing?
The shared Morning Desert Safari With Land Cruiser 4X4 is AED 225 per adult and AED 210 per child. The shared Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner is AED 240 per adult (12+) and AED 225 per child (5 to 11). Private safaris cost AED 799 per car in the morning and AED 1,400 per car in the evening, for up to 6 guests.
Do I drive the car during dune bashing?
No. On every Safari Desert Dubai safari the Land Cruiser 4x4 is driven by a professional driver and you ride as a passenger. If you want to drive in the desert yourself, book a self-drive Polaris or Can-Am buggy, priced per buggy, or one of the safari packages that add a 30 minute ATV quad bike ride.
Is hotel pickup included with dune bashing?
Yes. Pickup is included in all the shared and private Land Cruiser safaris, morning and evening. Pickup is not included in the self-drive buggy, quad bike or KTM prices: add a sharing transfer at AED 175 per person, a private car at AED 450 for 5 to 6, or meet at the location emailed after booking.
Can I book a desert camp without dune bashing?
Yes. The Standard Camp at AED 125 per person and the Premium Camp at AED 250 per person are BBQ dinners with live entertainment shows and no safari drive. A private transfer must be booked with either one, at AED 450 per car for 5 to 6 guests. From October to March, pickup is 2:45 to 3:30 PM.
Who should not go dune bashing?
Safari Desert Dubai gives no medical advice about dune bashing. Anyone who is pregnant, or who has a back, neck or heart condition or another health concern, should check with a doctor and tell the team before booking. The team can then suggest a trip without the 4x4 drive, such as a camp-only BBQ dinner.
What happens if I need to cancel my safari?
For bookings of up to 3 guests, there is no cancellation fee 96 hours or more before the tour, a 50% fee from 24 to 96 hours, and 100% under 24 hours or for a no-show. Refunds are less a 5% processing fee. Rescheduling is free, subject to availability, and changes are made by email only.
