Dune Buggy or Desert Safari in Dubai: Drive or Be Driven

Dune buggy or desert safari Dubai: compare self-drive Polaris and Can-Am buggies per buggy with Land Cruiser safaris per person or car, pickup included.

In this guide

If you are choosing between a dune buggy or desert safari in Dubai, the real question is whether you want to drive or be driven. A self-drive buggy puts you at the wheel of a Polaris or Can-Am for 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours, priced per buggy. A Land Cruiser safari puts a driver at the wheel, includes pickup and is priced per person or per car.

Key takeaways

  • A dune buggy is self-drive: you steer a Polaris RZR or Can-Am Maverick behind an experienced tour guide, after a safety briefing, wearing a helmet, goggles and gloves.
  • A desert safari is a passenger trip in a Land Cruiser 4x4 with dune bashing, and the evening version adds a short camel ride and a BBQ dinner with belly dance, tanoura and fire shows.
  • Buggies are priced per buggy, from AED 600 for a 2 Seater Polaris RZR 1000 CC for 30 minutes. Shared safaris are priced per person, from AED 225 per adult for the morning safari.
  • Safaris include pickup. Buggy prices do not: you book a transfer (AED 175 per person sharing or AED 450 per private car) or meet at the emailed location.
  • If you want a taste of both driving and a safari, the Evening or Morning Desert Safari + 30 Min ATV Quad Bike packages put a quad session inside the safari. A buggy and a safari can also sit on two separate days.

Drive a buggy or ride in a Land Cruiser: the short answer

Pick the buggy if the driving is the point. You hold the wheel, you choose how bold to be within the guide's path, and the session is short and focused. It suits people who want an hour of hands-on adrenaline and do not need dinner or shows.

Pick the safari if you want the desert without the responsibility of driving. A Safari Desert Dubai driver handles the dunes in a Land Cruiser 4x4, everyone in the car rides as a passenger, and the evening safari turns into a full outing with a camel ride, a BBQ dinner and live shows at the camp.

Neither is better in general. The right choice depends on who is coming, whether everyone wants to drive, how much of the day you want to spend in the desert, and how you prefer to pay: per vehicle or per head.

What you actually do on each

A self-drive dune buggy session

Every buggy session starts with a safety briefing from the guide. It covers how to drive the vehicle, how to use the safety gear and what to do in an emergency. You then drive the buggy yourself in the desert outside Dubai, following the guide's path and keeping a safe gap from the vehicle in front.

The buggies have roll cages and seatbelts. Each booking includes a helmet, goggles and gloves, plus refreshments or mineral water. You wear closed-toe shoes and bring a passport or a national ID.

Safari Desert Dubai runs four buggy models, each in a 2 seater and a 4 seater version:

  • Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC
  • Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC Turbo
  • Can-Am Maverick X3
  • Can-Am Maverick X3 RS TURBO RR

If you are unsure which model to pick, the guide to choosing between a Polaris and a Can-Am buggy walks through the models and seat sizes.

A Land Cruiser desert safari

On a safari you are a passenger. A driver takes the Land Cruiser 4x4 over the dunes, which is the part people call dune bashing. If you want to know exactly what that feels like before you book, read what dune bashing is and which safari includes it.

The morning safari runs in a Land Cruiser 4x4 and lasts about four hours, with water and soft drinks. The evening safari lasts about 5 to 6 hours and includes pickup, dune bashing in a 4x4, a short camel ride and a BBQ dinner with belly dance, tanoura and fire shows.

The difference in feel is simple. On a buggy, your attention is on the sand in front of the bonnet. On a safari, your attention can go to the view, the camels and the camp.

Prices and units side by side

The two products are priced in different ways, and that matters more than the headline numbers. Buggies are priced per buggy, so a 2 seater carries two people for one price and a 4 seater carries four. Shared safaris are priced per person, with separate adult and child rates. Private safaris are priced per car for up to 6 guests. Each price below stands on its own with its unit.

Self-drive buggy prices (per buggy)

Buggy 30 min 1 hour 2 hours
2 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC AED 600 AED 900 AED 1,750
4 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC AED 800 AED 1,200 AED 2,200
2 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC Turbo AED 900 AED 1,200 AED 2,200
4 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC Turbo AED 1,200 AED 2,150 AED 3,975
2 Seater Can-Am Maverick X3 AED 999 AED 1,499 AED 2,800
4 Seater Can-Am Maverick X3 AED 1,200 AED 1,950 AED 3,800
2 Seater Can-Am Maverick X3 RS TURBO RR AED 1,200 AED 2,300 AED 4,200
4 Seater Can-Am Maverick X3 RS TURBO RR AED 1,400 AED 2,700 AED 5,200

Desert safari prices (per person or per car, pickup included)

Safari Unit Price
Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner (shared) per adult (12+) AED 240
Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner (shared) per child (5 to 11) AED 225
Morning Desert Safari With Land Cruiser 4X4 (shared) per adult AED 225
Morning Desert Safari With Land Cruiser 4X4 (shared) per child AED 210
Private Morning Desert Safari With Land Cruiser 4X4 per car, up to 6 guests AED 799
Private Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner Land Cruiser 4x4 per car, up to 6 guests AED 1,400

Reading the two tables together

A buggy price is the price of the vehicle for the time you choose, not the price of a seat. A shared safari price is the price of one seat, so each adult and each child has their own rate. A private safari price covers the whole car for up to 6 guests.

Because the units differ, compare like with like. Look at the vehicle price you would pay for a buggy, then look at the seat prices or the car price you would pay for a safari, and decide which fits your group. The buggy transfer is a separate line, covered in the next section.

Pickup and timing

Getting to the buggy

No buggy price includes pickup. You have three ways to get there:

  • A sharing transfer at AED 175 per person, for two or more guests from one pickup point.
  • A private car at AED 450 for 5 to 6 guests.
  • Meeting on site. The location is emailed to you after booking.

The transfer picks you up 1 hour before your start time. Choose the option when you book, so the pickup time can be set against your start time.

Getting to the safari

Every safari includes pickup, both shared and private. There is nothing extra to arrange for transport, which is one practical reason a safari can be easier for first-time visitors.

When each one runs

Buggies start on the hour from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, daily, so you can fit a session around the rest of your day. The session itself is 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours.

The safaris are longer blocks of time. The morning safari lasts about four hours. The evening safari lasts about 5 to 6 hours, because it includes the camp, the BBQ dinner and the shows after the drive.

The site names October to March as the best season for desert activities, for buggies and safaris alike.

What is included in each

Buggy inclusions

  • A self-drive tour with an experienced tour guide
  • A safety briefing before the ride
  • A helmet, goggles and gloves
  • Refreshments or mineral water
  • A buggy with a roll cage and seatbelts

Not included: pickup (booked as a transfer) and sandboarding. A camel ride (20 to 25 min) is AED 150 per person and sandboarding is AED 50 per person, both as extras on the activities form.

Evening safari inclusions

  • Pickup
  • Dune bashing in a 4x4
  • A short camel ride
  • A BBQ dinner
  • Belly dance, tanoura and fire shows

Morning safari inclusions

  • Pickup
  • A Land Cruiser 4x4 drive of about four hours
  • Water and soft drinks

If dinner is a deciding factor, the evening safari is the one to look at, in its shared or private version.

Who each one suits

Friends who all want to drive

A buggy is the natural pick. Two friends can share a 2 seater, and four can share a 4 seater, with one price per buggy. If more than four people want to drive, book more than one buggy so each group has its own vehicle.

Mixed groups where not everyone wants to drive

This is where the safari wins. In a Land Cruiser nobody has to drive, so the person who wants a calm view and the person who wants the dune bashing can share the same car. A private car takes up to 6 guests, so a family or a small group can have the vehicle to themselves.

Families with children

The shared safaris have a child rate for ages 5 to 11, and adults are 12 and over. That makes a safari the simpler choice for families with young children, since everyone rides as a passenger and the evening includes dinner.

For buggies, confirm the ages of every driver and passenger when booking. The team will tell you what applies to your group.

First-timers in the desert

If you have never been in the dunes, a safari is the gentler introduction. You see the desert, try a short camel ride on the evening safari and watch the shows, without learning to handle a vehicle. You can always come back for a buggy session on another day.

People who want a short, focused activity

A buggy session of 30 minutes or 1 hour, with hourly starts from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM, fits around other plans. A safari takes most of a morning or an evening.

Health questions

Dune bashing and self-drive buggies both mean riding over sand dunes. If you are pregnant or have a back, neck or heart condition, check with your doctor and tell the team before booking. This applies to both options.

Doing both: the combined safari packages

You do not always have to choose. Safari Desert Dubai runs two shared packages that add a 30 minute quad bike session to a safari, with pickup included:

Package Adult (12+) Child (5 to 11)
Evening Desert Safari + 30 Min ATV Quad Bike AED 375 per adult AED 340 per child
Morning Desert Safari + 30 Min ATV Quad Bike AED 290 per adult AED 285 per child

Note that the add-on in these packages is a quad bike (ATV), not a dune buggy. If driving a quad is enough of a hands-on taste for you, these packages give you the drive and the safari in one booking. The guide to whether a safari with a quad bike or a standalone quad fits you better goes into that choice.

A buggy and a safari on separate days

If it has to be a buggy, the simplest plan is to book the buggy on one day and the safari on another. Each runs at its own pace, with its own pickup arrangements, and nobody is rushing between the two.

A buggy and a safari on the same day

Some visitors want both on one day, for example a morning buggy session and the evening safari. Buggies start on the hour from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM and the evening safari runs about 5 to 6 hours, so tell the team your plan when you book. They can confirm the pickup times so the two bookings do not overlap.

Practical planning advice

  • Count drivers, not just people. For a buggy, decide how many people want to drive and pick the 2 seater or 4 seater to match. For a safari, count adults and children separately for the shared rates, or count up to 6 guests for a private car.
  • Book the buggy transfer at the same time. Choose the sharing transfer at AED 175 per person, the private car at AED 450, or the emailed meeting point, and note that pickup comes 1 hour before the start.
  • Dress for the activity. Wear closed-toe shoes for a buggy session. The helmet, goggles and gloves are part of the booking, so you do not need to bring your own.
  • Bring ID. Buggy and quad riders bring a passport or a national ID.
  • Pick your season. October to March is the season the site names as best.
  • Ask about ages early. Tell the team the ages of everyone in your group, especially for buggy passengers and drivers.

You can browse all buggy sessions on the dune buggy rental page and every morning and evening option on the desert safari tours page.

Booking, payment and the refund policy

How payment works

Payment is by Visa or Mastercard in AED, in full online when you book, with no card fee. The booking confirmation arrives by email within 48 hours of payment.

Cancelling or changing

For bookings of up to 3 guests, there is no cancellation fee if you cancel 96 hours or more before the tour. A 50% fee applies from 24 to 96 hours before, and 100% under 24 hours or for a no-show. Refunds are less a 5% processing fee. Bookings of 4 or more guests follow separate terms, so read the refund policy page before booking a larger group.

Rescheduling is possible at no charge, subject to availability. Cancel or change by email only.

If Safari Desert Dubai cancels a tour, for example for weather, you choose between a refund less the 5% fee or a new date at no charge. Once a tour has started, it is not refunded.

In short

Drive a buggy if the driving itself is what you want: a Polaris or Can-Am, a guide out front, 30 minutes to 2 hours, priced per buggy, with a transfer booked on top. Ride in a Land Cruiser if you want the desert as a passenger: pickup included, priced per person or per car, and in the evening a camel ride, BBQ dinner and shows. If you want a little of both, the safari + 30 Min ATV packages or two separate days cover it.

Ready to choose? Book on the Safari Desert Dubai booking page, or call +971 52 447 2719 or email [email protected] with your date, your pickup point and who is coming, and the team will help you pick between a buggy and a safari.

FAQ

Questions to ask before your desert adventure

Is a dune buggy or a desert safari better in Dubai?
Neither is better for everyone. Choose a self-drive buggy if you want to steer a Polaris or Can-Am yourself behind a guide for 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours. Choose a Land Cruiser safari if you would rather ride as a passenger, have pickup included and, in the evening, enjoy a camel ride, BBQ dinner and shows.
How is a dune buggy priced compared with a desert safari?
Buggies are priced per buggy, so one price covers the vehicle: a 2 Seater Polaris Dune Buggy RZR 1000 CC is AED 600 for 30 minutes. Shared safaris are priced per person, for example AED 240 per adult on the evening safari. Private safaris are priced per car for up to 6 guests.
Does the dune buggy price include pickup?
No. Buggy prices cover the vehicle, the guide and the safety gear, not transport. You can add a sharing transfer at AED 175 per person for two or more guests from one pickup point, a private car at AED 450 for 5 to 6 guests, or meet at the location emailed after booking. Safaris include pickup.
What is included in the evening desert safari?
The Evening Desert Safari With BBQ Dinner includes pickup, dune bashing in a 4x4, a short camel ride and a BBQ dinner with belly dance, tanoura and fire shows. It lasts about 5 to 6 hours. The shared price is AED 240 per adult aged 12 and over and AED 225 per child aged 5 to 11.
Can I drive something during a desert safari?
Yes, with the combined packages. The Evening Desert Safari + 30 Min ATV Quad Bike is AED 375 per adult and AED 340 per child, and the morning version is AED 290 per adult and AED 285 per child. The added vehicle is a quad bike, not a buggy, and pickup is included.
Can I do a dune buggy and a desert safari on the same day?
It can be planned, since buggies start on the hour from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM and the evening safari runs about 5 to 6 hours. Tell the team both bookings when you reserve so they can confirm pickup times. Booking the buggy and the safari on separate days is the simpler plan.
Which option suits families with young children?
A shared safari is usually the easier fit, because everyone rides as a passenger and there is a child rate for ages 5 to 11, with adults counted from 12. For buggy drivers and passengers, confirm the ages of everyone in your group when booking so the team can tell you what applies.
What is the cancellation policy for buggies and safaris?
For bookings of up to 3 guests, there is no cancellation fee 96 hours or more before the tour, and refunds are less a 5% processing fee. Changes and cancellations are made by email only. Read the refund policy page for the full terms, including those for larger bookings.
